Welcome to the world of book registrations (the register) - the anchor for your book's identity in the literary world. This section holds crucial information that establishes your book's authenticity and uniqueness.

Using Registrations via the "Register" button, you can obtain and create various important pieces of information. More than that, you can reuse this information in other parts of your process so you never have to enter it again.

Copyright

Safeguard your creative endeavor with copyright protection. It's the legal shield that secures your book's unique voice. Within Made Live, your Copyright information can be easily added and placed in the appropriate section of your finished book, typically on the reverse side of the title page. The rules and regulations around copyright differs by country:

  • To register a copyright in Canada, you simply print a copyright statement inside your book. This will be recognized in many countries. The copyright statement includes the copyright symbol followed by the year and the name of the holder of the copyright, which is usually the author.
  • Registering a copyright in the United States needs to be done by going to the U.S. Copyright Office

The information you enter for your copyright will be effortlessly incorporated into your book's design.

ISBN

The International Standard Book Number is your book's fingerprint. It is a unique identification number that is recognized by 159 countries and territories. It's how your masterpiece is tracked, catalogued, and identified among millions of others. Note: an ISBN is needed in order to create a barcode.

Obtaining an ISBN is a vital step for your book as it empowers you to rightfully claim your book's presence in the literary landscape. As seen in the image below, Made Live includes links to the services that help you secure your ISBN in the United States and Canada. In other areas, you need to apply to the ISBN agency in your country. It is typically free and done online. It is recommended to make this application early in the layout process as you will need it to obtain other data, like CIP (see below) and each step of the process can take a few weeks.

Note that if you plan to publish a series of books, you can apply for several ISBNs at a time and later you can assign one of these numbers to the next books in the series.

PCIP & PCN

While the acronym differs by country, it all serves the same purpose: to help libraries quickly and easily pick up your book! If having your book available in libraries is one of your goals, you will need to plan ahead. Note:

  • These steps can only be taken once you have locked in your title and secured an ISBN.
  • Securing this data does not guarantee a book will be purchased by libraries, but it does make the cataloging process more streamlined once a library decides to acquire the book.

CIP Data is the information libraries use to catalogue your book. The application for CIP requires your ISBN number, so apply for the ISBN first. CIP/PCIP data is prepared before a book is published, by the national library of the country where the work is published or by the library of a publishing organization, like a government department.

This information, in the case of books, is included on the copyright page, where catalogers can quickly and easily access the information when they are adding items to their collections. Books without CIP/PCIP are often set aside to be catalogued later, meaning your book will not hit the shelves and get into the hands of readers as quickly as you would like. This often takes a few weeks to secure, requires an ISBN, and is paid for by the author.

Obtaining CIP & PCIP in Canada

  • In Canada, CIP data is no longer available for self-published books, but you can get around this by using a company name as the publisher. Alternatively, you will need to work with a third-party service to secure this data. To obtain CIP in Canada, at no charge, please visit this site for more information and to begin the process. You will be asked in several places to attach things like the title page, and the preface. These sections of the book may not be ready when you are applying so you can send them later. You should make this application early in the layout process to avoid delaying book production.
  • Obtaining CIP/PCIP/PCN in the United States
  • In the United States, CIP data is obtained through the Library of Congress. For more information, please visit this site

HumanMade Identifier (HMID)

Exclusive to Made Live, the HumanMade Identifier, or HMID, is a QR Code and publically available URL that tells readers your book is a product of human creativity, and can redirect readers to your custom author page. Made Live tracks the amount of work both yourself and Made Live Assist put into the development of your book. Because Made Live Assist is limited to advising and generating non-creative content, your authorship is safe with us, and by using Made Live you'll be able to confirm the authenticity of your intellectual property as a valid artistic work by using our HMID analytics (coming soon).

The details you provide here will seamlessly integrate into your book design through your HMID (HumanMade ID).
