Empowering authors everywhere to self-publish visual books

I'd like to tell you a story...

But first, let’s set the scene and introduce you to our characters.

Our founder and CEO, Karen, spent nearly two decades as a pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist, using children’s books as a key element in sessions with clients and falling in love with the genre. Jesse, our founder and CTO, was that kid who always had his nose buried in a book. He started coding “for fun” when he was just twelve years old – and he never stopped. He’s been a career technologist and software engineer for over twenty years.

Despite both enjoying successful careers, they both grew restless and began dreaming of writing a series of children’s picture books together. With heads full of ideas and no shortage of enthusiasm, they got to work. They knew publishing would be challenging, so as they wrote, they researched – and quickly discovered just how much there was to learn. Bringing a book to life, it turned out, involved much, much more than writing.

The process was long and arduous. They knew they would have to find a way to publish easily, often, and much faster if they were going to make it in the highly competitive publishing world. The hunt for solutions began.

They were defeated to learn only about 1% of aspiring authors ever make it in the world of traditional publishing, and the royalty rates are less than exciting.

They looked at self-publishing but found a confusing array of disjointed tools and services, expensive and predatory vanity publishers, and a steep learning curve at every turn. Yet, they found no innovations created specifically for authors like them, with end-to-end solutions to help them bring their book to life in an accessible and straightforward way.

This is where Made Live's story began.

Facing ambitious publishing goals and no acceptable solutions, the idea for Made Live emerged. Technology made self-publishing accessible for millions of novelists, so they set out on a mission to help authors of illustrated books around the world create and publish better books, faster and more affordably than ever before.

Since it’s inception, Made Live has remained focused on creating products and services to save authors from the trials and tribulations of self-publishing illustrated books.

Made Live was founded in 2020 by storytellers who wanted a better way to self-publish illustrated and visual books.

We’re breaking away from traditional publishing limitations and self-publishing chaos. We’re building something new: a platform that combines professional publishing expertise with modern technology – designed specifically for the unique needs of visual storytellers.

We envision a future where great stories aren’t held back by industry gatekeepers or technical barriers. Where creators like you can focus on what you do best through accessible, professional-grade publishing tools and expertise.

Founder + CEO

Karen Richard

As a pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist for nearly 20 years, Karen developed a deep love for children's books - and a desire to self-publish her own. Inspired to create the self-publishing solution she wanted but couldn't find, she stepped into self-publishing, bringing with her a passion for visual storytelling, a deep connection to the drive behind artistic creation, and a commitment to empower authors to bring their books to life.

Founder + CTO

Jesse Richard

Jesse has over 20 years of experience in tech and startup as a software developer, including successful business sales and exits. He spends most of his time focused on building and improving Made Live's pioneering self-publishing platform. Outside of Made Live, he devours dystopian and sci-fi novels and a eclectic array of music.
With a handful of (unpublished) novels under his belt, he dreams of one day finally publishing and seeing his book on store shelves.
